Situated in Wilkes County, Georgia, Washington is a city with an estimated population of more than 4,300 residents. The county seat of Wilkes County, it’s commonly referred to as Washington-Wilkes by the local people, distinguishing it from other towns and cities in the U.S named after George Washington.

In 1780, in the midst of the American Revolutionary War, a town called Heard’s Fort was laid out in the county. The council decided to name the new town Washington, making it the first town in the U.S. to be named in the honor of George Washington. The Commander-in-Chief of the American armies confirmed the town during his visit to Georgia in 1791, and thus it became the first city to be chartered in his name

The city has the distinction of being the first in many historical events. First Baptist Church was established in 1783 at Fishing Creek in Upper Georgia. In 1795, the first successful cotton gin was set up and perfected in Wilkes County by Eli Whitney. Georgia’s first cotton mill was erected on Upton Creek in 1811.
